Worldcoin, the blockchain identity project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has made significant advancements by integrating with Okta and introducing its identity protocol, World ID, in Germany. The project aims to utilise biometric data for user verification and enhance privacy compared to alternatives such as Google sign-in.

What’s the latest news

According to a press release shared with CoinDesk on Thursday, Worldcoin’s World ID verification is now available in Germany. Users will have the opportunity to achieve full verification by utilising custom-designed hardware called the Orbs, which employ biometric data. The hardware will be introduced throughout the country, starting with Berlin.

Okta, a prominent identity and access management software provider, is targeting billions of users and has hundreds of millions already. In a blog post Okta revealed that developers can now adopt a “Sign in with Worldcoin” option on their apps. This can be done through Okta’s Auth0 marketplace, alongside existing sign-in options like Google or Facebook.

What is World ID?

World ID is Worldcoin’s identity protocol, leveraging zero-knowledge proofs and biometrics to validate an individual’s human and unique identity. To achieve full verification through the Worldcoin protocol, users must have their irises scanned at Orbs locations across the globe. The Orbs utilise artificial intelligence to generate cryptographic IDs in near real-time.The resulting digital key stored on users’ devices. By default, the Orb does not retain any data captured during the verification process.

While users have the option to retain their data, it is encrypted. The data is used for purposes such as model accuracy and inclusivity improvement. Tiago Sada, head of product, engineering, and design at Tools for Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin, assured that users can always revoke permission to access their data.

World ID ensures privacy guarantees even for developers integrating the sign-in option, unlike other alternatives like Google. Integration with Okta allows Worldcoin to reach thousands of applications, with developers easily implementing the solution through minor code changes.

Furthermore, World ID’s utilisation of biometric data enables developers and applications to effectively differentiate between humans and bots. This in turn bolsters fraud prevention measures.

And on top of the above…

With 1.9 million users across 30 countries Worldcoin continues to expand its reach and influence in the realm of blockchain-based identity solutions.

The World ID system offered by Worldcoin utilises zero-knowledge proofs to confirm users’ proof of personhood without compromising their personal information. Germany, the largest economy in the EU, spearheads the development of AI tools in Europe. World ID will facilitate digital proof of uniqueness and humanness for over 60 million adult citizens. The hops is that it will enhance their online experiences and interactions through AI-safe proof of personhood credentials.
