London-based VertiGIS, a leading name in geographic information systems (GIS) and spatial asset management, announced today its acquisition of ibR Gesellschaft für Geoinformation mbH (ibR). Based in Bonn, Germany, ibR specialises in GIS systems for cadaster and surveying. The deal’s financial details remain undisclosed.

What they said

Andy Berry, CEO of VertiGIS, remarked, “We feel our existing customers and new ones will benefit greatly from the enhanced capabilities ibR brings us.”

The acquisition aligns with VertiGIS’s strategy to expand its industry-specific solutions in land management. Both companies share decades of experience in cadaster, surveying, and land development. Dr. Hans-Gerd Riemer, CEO of ibR, stated, “I am delighted that the complementary strengths of both companies are being combined. This enables us to support municipalities and public authorities in generating added value from their GIS data.”

New business unit & innovation center

In addition to the acquisition, VertiGIS also announced a new business unit focused on land management. This unit combines the expertise of both companies across the DACH region, which comprises Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. “This is a cornerstone of our global business,” added Berry.

Further broadening its scope, VertiGIS has founded a Berlin-based Innovation Center. The center aims to focus on SaaS and cloud development to better serve an expanding customer base. “The Innovation Center will be focused on the development of cloud and SaaS solutions to ensure our technology portfolio provides the very best long-term value to our customers,” concluded Berry.

Prolific growth and customer base

VertiGIS, backed by global investment firm Battery Ventures, has seen substantial growth and diversification since 2017. It operates in Europe and North America, catering to governments, utilities, and other sectors. For example, VertiGIS’s technology helps water utilities notify affected customers about service interruptions and enables local governments to manage maintenance contracts effectively.

The company’s software solutions are currently used by more than 5,000 customers and millions of end-users worldwide. Notably, its product portfolio is designed to extend the capabilities of leading GIS software, such as Esri’s ArcGIS®.
