Nexspace, a new colocation operator, has inaugurated its first data center this month at the Heidelberg Innovation Park (HIP) in Germany. The launch marks a significant milestone for the company, introducing a modern digital infrastructure facility in a burgeoning innovation hub.
Details of the Heidelberg facility
The data center, constructed in the former Patton Barracks area of HIP, spans over 4,000 sqm (43,055 sq ft) and offers an IT load capacity of 2MW. Notably, the facility is designed for future expansion, with potential to double its size to 8,000 sqm (86,110 sq ft). It features a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.25 and is connected to the local district heating network for enhanced sustainability.
Construction & sustainability efforts
The project, initiated in November 2022, was completed by Germany’s Data Center Group (DCG) as the general contractor. Collaborating with Data Center Constructions GmbH (DCC), Data Center Security GmbH (DCS), and InfraRed Capital Partners, the construction emphasized innovative and sustainable approaches. Ralf Siefen, CEO of Data Center Group, highlighted the project’s innovation in sustainable cooling supply, developed in collaboration with Heidelberg’s municipal utilities.
Heidelberg’s strategic significance
The Heidelberg Innovation Park, covering 15 hectares, is emerging as a key location for IT, AI, digital, and life sciences innovation with regional appeal. The new data center is seen as a critical component in this development. Eckart Würzner, the mayor of Heidelberg, emphasized the data center’s role in strengthening Heidelberg as a future-oriented location. He also noted its contribution to environmental protection through efficient and sustainable operations, utilising renewable energy sources.
