In a significant step towards modernizing retail shopping, German retail powerhouse REWE has teamed up with Catch. The latter is an Israeli startup specializing in retail AI. This partnership is set to bring a cutting-edge shopping experience to consumers through Catch’s AI multichannel platform. REWE is a leader in the German food retail sector. It has a turnover of 28.4 billion euros in 2022, employs over 160,000 people and operates 3,800 stores across Germany. The collaboration was initiated by REWE digital’s “Research & Innovation” hub, focusing on embedding advanced technology into supermarket workflows.
Innovation at the heart of Rewe
The first stage of this technological upgrade was rolled out in the REWE Center in Cologne. Rewe introduced 110 smart carts equipped with tablets. These tablets feature the “Catch smart personal assistant”. The “assistant” simplifies shopping by allowing customers to scan handwritten lists or digitally upload them without the need for app downloads or registration. Rewe has put a lot of emphasis on the user-friendly aspect of this innovation, to pursuade more customers to use the carts.

Catch was established in 2022 by former executives of the Israeli unicorn Trax, Shlomi Dayan and Itai Lishner. It is now rapidly making its mark in the retail technology space. Since launching its product in May 2023, Catch has grown to employ 19 individuals across its R&D center in Israel and German offices. The company’s technology is already enhancing shopping experiences at Tiv Taam stores in Israel and various international locations, engaging over 120,000 active shoppers and sending out more than a million personalized messages and deals each month.
