Berlin, Hamburg and Munich are officially the top three cities in Germany that can be considered the sratup hubs. According to the new report by German Startup Association (DSC), the number of startups in Germany grew in the first half of 2023, with over 1,300 startups being set up.

The numbers

DSC reports that the above shows a 16% increase year over year in new companies registration. Registrations rose by over 40% in Berlin and Hamburg, and 2% in Munich. Each city saw 262, 90 and 95 startups respectively begin their journey in the business world. Somehow, it was also found that fairly small university towns of Karlsruhe, Darmstadt and Heidelberg were in the top destinations for startups (per capita).

The above indicates a clear link between research centres and business. Favourable to business environment in universities continues to drive innovation and entrepreneurship.

In order to make better use of our strength in research, we need to make the topic of entrepreneurship more prominent in universities and lower legal and bureaucratic hurdles for setting up companies.

Post-COVID growth

Despite the decline in business in 2022, the above is showing a promising recovery for startups, driven in large part by the tech scene. The same also applies to the tourism-related businesses, where startups are looking to pounce upon opportunities, thanks to the growth in the travelling and hospitality industries.

Christian Miele emphasised that it the numbers show German business scene’s resilience and economic strength. This applies in particular to dealing with the post-pandemic period.

To underline the above, the number of startups in the tourist sector rose by a staggering 111%.

Other sectors benefited from growth in 2023 as well. These include the mobility sector (+ 30), grocery companies (+ 28%) and startups in the software industry (+23%).

In some less optimistic news, the cryptocurrency and blockchain world continued with its decline. The number of companies registered in the above sectors dropped by 63%. This clearly signifies that any possible turnaround is yet to come to crypto and its proponents. The other decline could be observed in the environmental tech industry (-18%) and agriculture sector (-13%).
