Munich-based defence technology startup ARX has recently garnered attention for its innovative approach to addressing training inefficiencies and securing €1.15 million in a pre-seed funding round spearheaded by Project A Ventures.
These funds are earmarked for the development of autonomous robotic platforms, applicable for both military and civilian sectors. Furthermore, the injection of capital will bolster the team, the technology, and elevate production capacities.
Origins and expertise
Established in 2021, ARX is the brainchild of Marc Wietfeld and Stefan Röbel. This startup is a spin-off from the GEREON research project housed at the German Armed Forces University in Munich. Their focus? Developing autonomous unmanned systems with dual-use applications. They specialise in building and operating autonomous Single-to-Multi-Use robots tailored for a myriad of applications. The idea is to assist soldiers and civilian first responders in making well-informed decisions during perilous situations.
A multifaceted robotic solution
For military applications, ARX robots function as consumable tools. They can train troops, collect intelligence, and navigate the complexities of military missions. In a civilian context, these robots serve as steadfast support for emergency relief.
The GEREON ground robots, a product of ARX, come equipped with sensors, cameras, alarms, and transport mechanisms. Currently, these units are undergoing testing with defence corporations and the armed forces across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Estonia.
ARX robots can mimic gunshots, produce artificial fog, jam drone communications, and even utilise laser beams to distract. Their potential applications are vast, ranging from mine detection to troop supplies.
In the future, ARX has plans for its robots to operate autonomously in swarms. This collaborative functionality ensures operational continuity, even if one robot malfunctions.
For civilian users, ARX’s capabilities are equally impressive. Whether it’s traversing rugged terrains in disaster-stricken areas or enhancing perimeter security, ARX robots are up for the task.
The brains behind ARX
Marc Wietfeld, CEO of ARX and an active German Army officer, conceived ARX from his experiences as an infantry officer. Stefan Röbel, COO and a former army officer, has held pivotal roles at tech giants such as Amazon and Grover.
Wietfeld stated, “Our team, comprising military, research, and industry experts, is dedicated to creating software and hardware solutions that significantly amplify the capabilities of Western Allies.”
Currently, ARX’s first units are being tested by defence firms and armed forces in several European countries. With the recent funding and a clear vision, ARX seems poised to revolutionise defence technology.
