Rheinmetall, a German enterprise, announced the acquisition of the Dutch startup REEQ. This strategic move sees Rheinmetall expanding its portfolio to include innovative light hybrid vehicles.
REEQ, established in 2018, is at the forefront of developing light hybrid tactical vehicles. Its vehicle lineup includes an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), a side-by-side buggy, and a quad. Notably, all these vehicles boast the same fully electric drivetrain.
The acquisition was facilitated through Rheinmetall’s Dutch subsidiary, Rheinmetall Defence Nederland. This subsidiary, a part of the Vehicle Systems Division, acquired 100 per cent of REEQ’s shares at the start of March 2024. However, both parties have agreed to keep the purchase price confidential.

The significance of the acquisition
By integrating REEQ into its fold, Rheinmetall not only broadens its array of lightweight tactical vehicles but also moves towards incorporating hybrid technology. This acquisition is a clear response to the Dutch political and defence leaders’ calls for contributions to the defence industry.
“Through this acquisition, Rheinmetall expands its range of vehicles to include innovative light hybrid vehicles,” the company stated, highlighting its commitment to innovation.
Moreover, Rheinmetall’s acquisition of REEQ will enable the company to provide both manned and unmanned light tactical mobility solutions. These will be available not just in the Netherlands, but across European markets as well. Furthermore, Rheinmetall can now offer a microgrid solution alongside REEQ’s mobility offerings, marking a significant enhancement in its service capability.
REEQ will continue to operate as a startup within the Rheinmetall Group, with its development and production based in the Netherlands. This arrangement ensures that REEQ’s innovative spirit remains intact while benefiting from Rheinmetall’s extensive resources and market reach.
