Daimler Truck AG is set to conduct road tests of its Mercedes-Benz hydrogen fuel-cell trucks. The trials, involving major partners like Amazon and Air Products, aim to explore the trucks’ efficiency and sustainability on specific German routes.
Daimler Truck and the role of hydrogen in transportation
As the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, Daimler Truck AG employs around 100,000 staff globally. Headquartered in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany, it was part of Daimler AG until December 2021. These trials underscore the increasing focus on hydrogen as a clean energy source. Daimler Truck AG’s initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance sustainable transportation.
The Mercedes-Benz GenH2 trucks will use green hydrogen, sourced from clean energy, requiring more refueling infrastructure development.
Partners in sustainability
Partners like Amazon and Air Products contribute to the trials, aligning with their carbon neutrality goals. Amazon, for instance, aims for carbon neutrality by 2040.
Daimler’s new “subcooled” liquid hydrogen technology, sLH2, is central to these trials. It promises increased efficiency and range for the trucks. The trials will include transporting various products, utilizing sLH2 stations near the French border and Duisburg area.
Supporting infrastructure
Air Products, a trial partner, provides critical refueling infrastructure and hydrogen supply for the tests. Daimler plans to increase transparency around its sLH2 technology, encouraging broader industry collaboration and development.
