The German government, under Chancellor Olaf Scholz, has initiated a proposal to mandate the installation of fast chargers at gas stations. Announced at the IAA Mobility 2023 event, this legislation aims to alleviate “range anxiety” among electric vehicle (EV) drivers.

The mandate will apply to approximately 80% of gas stations in Germany, totalling around 11,000 facilities. This move aligns with the government’s broader goal of achieving 1 million public charging points across the country by 2030. However, a recent survey by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) reveals that the current installation stands at merely 10% of this ambitious target.

Ideal solution by ADS-TEC Energy

ADS-TEC Energy, renowned for its battery-buffered, ultra-fast charging technology, presents its ChargeBox and ChargePost products as the perfect fit for this mandate. Especially where grid upgrades for high-power charging capacities are unfeasible due to space or noise constraints, these products shine. Designed for “normal” grid connections, they require minimal space, generate low noise, and offer ultra-fast charging at up to 320 kW, making them suitable for both urban and rural settings. Thomas Speidel, CEO of ADS-TEC Energy, underscores the convenience and acceptance these solutions can bring to e-mobility, particularly when fast charging becomes a standard at common refuelling stops like gas stations.

Adaptability to gas stations

The compact design of ADS-TEC Energy’s charging solutions, with a footprint of merely 1.6 m² for ChargeBox, allows easy integration into existing gas station setups. ChargeBox and ChargePost enable simultaneous charging for two electric vehicles at high power, translating to a 100-kilometre range within minutes. The silent operation of these chargers, even at peak power, is an added advantage.

Additional revenue streams

Moreover, ChargePost, besides offering ultra-fast charging, features two 75-inch UHD monitors that can serve as advertising boards, opening up additional revenue avenues for operators. The bidirectional use of ChargePost and the potential to integrate self-generated energy from PV systems pave the way for innovative business models, marrying mobility and electricity sectors.

Proven solutions garnering interest

The practicality and benefits of ADS-TEC Energy’s solutions are already being acknowledged in the market. JOLT Energy, a Charge Point Operator, has deployed numerous ChargeBox stations at gas stations across major German cities. Maurice Neligan, CEO of JOLT Energy, highlights the substantial interest from gas station operators and owners, appreciating the reliable and space-saving solution offered for the impending fast-charging mandate.

This collaboration allows gas stations to tap into additional revenue and new customer bases without hefty investments in charging infrastructure, marking a timely move to meet the upcoming regulatory requisites.
