Amidst rapid digitalisation and the rising utilisation of powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems, Mercedes-Benz is ensuring every job profile within the company is transforming. As part of the Turn2Learn initiative, the firm is investing over €2 billion into the global workforce’s qualification until 2030.

Up-skilling in digitalisation and AI

The Turn2Learn initiative is particularly focused on digitalisation and AI. For instance, over 600 employees from production, production-related sectors and administration are participating in the two pilot programmes: D.SHIFT and Data Worker. These initiatives aim to up-skill staff to become data and AI specialists. The first graduates will receive their certificates in the coming days. These will include team members from various Mercedes-Benz locations in the United States. Given the overwhelming interest from employees, these programmes are now set for expansion.

Voices from the boardroom

“To successfully shape the company’s transformation, we need a team that embraces change and constantly expands its digital skills,”

Sabine Kohleisen, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG responsible for Human Resources, and Director of Labor Relations.

Addressing the necessity for more data specialists, Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, highlighted the success of D.SHIFT in Berlin and Untertürkheim. He revealed plans to expand this unique initiative in the coming months.

Ergun Lümali, Chairman of the General Works Council of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, stressed the importance of continuous training and education, given the rapid changes in technology and the world of work.

Innovation in employee qualification through Turn2Learn

Under the Turn2Learn initiative, Mercedes-Benz provides employees with a comprehensive range of opportunities to learn in a self-determined and flexible manner. Learning opportunities range from short courses to learning paths and academic degrees, all aligned with the Group’s strategic goals.

Rise in digital skill development

Investments in digital skills development have increased across the company. In 2022, there were around 120,000 participations in digitalisation-related training courses worldwide. Since the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz employees have invested over 900,000 hours in professional and personal training.

D.SHIFT and Data Worker: Forging the digital job environment

To promote the digital transformation in production, the in-service training programme, D.SHIFT, was launched in 2021. Similarly, the companywide Data Worker pilot programme launched in 2022. It allows employees to choose between four special learning paths, with training durations ranging between 60 and 400 hours.

A data-driven future

“The transformation process towards becoming a digital company is critically dependent on data,” remarked Jan Brecht, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

Generative AI applications are being utilised across the company. Plans were recently announced to integrate AI into the vehicle voice control system and Mercedes-Benz is also testing ChatGPT in production.
