Billwerk+, a leading provider of subscription management and recurring billing software solutions in Europe, has announced the acquisition of plenigo. The latter is a German software solution provider for publishing and media companies.

Plenigo

Founded in 2013, plenigo has become a prominent SaaS provider for reader-funded business models in the DACH region, serving nearly 70 customers, including renowned German media houses.

plenigo’s software solution offers subscription sales control, recurring billing, payment processing control, and sector-specific functions. With headquarters in Kempten and additional offices in Berlin and Hamburg, plenigo’s addition to the group enhances Billwerk+’s presence in the publishing and media sector. The acquisition meets the sector’s long-standing need for advanced subscription management and recurring billing software solutions.

The acquisition of plenigo also complements Billwerk+’s product offering in the digital and print publishing sectors. The deal presents potential for international growth by leveraging Billwerk+’s existing strong presence across DACH, the Nordics, and France.

Investors behind the deal

PSG Equity, a growth equity firm, will continue to hold a controlling stake in Billwerk+.

plenigo is the third acquisition made by Billwerk+ since PSG’s initial investment in May 2021. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed. With this acquisition, Billwerk+ solidifies its position as a leading provider of subscription management, recurring billing, and payments software, supporting the digital value chain for subscription business models.

Key figures involved

Thorsten Petter and Maximilian Schweitzer, co-founders of plenigo, will become shareholders of the group and actively contribute to the platform’s continued development. The CEOs of both companies express excitement about the combination. They highlighted the opportunity to accelerate technological transformation in the German publishing industry and support publishers in the digital reader financing transition.

“The fragmented nature of the European subscription management and recurring billing market continues to provide a significant opportunity to develop a genuinely pan-European leader.”

Romain Railhac, Managing Director at PSG
